If I cast Altered Ego X=1 and copy a Winding Constrictor, does the Altered Ego enter with one counter or two?

Asked by SmugLookingBarrel 7 years ago

Altered Ego can enter the battlefield as a copy of another creature and can also enter with +1/+1 counters on it. If I have it enter as a copy of Winding Constrictor, will it realize it's a Winding Constrictor soon enough to add an extra +1/+1 counter from its own ability?

As often, the Gatherer rulings have the answer:

Winding Constrictor's effect can't apply to itself as it's entering the battlefield or to any other permanent entering the battlefield at the same time as it.

Since an Altered Ego entering the battlefield is essentially the same as a Winding Constrictor doing so, this ruling applies. You will only get a single counter (assuming X=1).

Note that if you control the original Winding Constrictor, you'll still apply the effect from that one.
