Hydra Omnivore Confusion

If you combine Hydra Omnivore and Mage Slayer will my hydras ability still be activated
If you attack somebody with Hydra Omnivore equipped with Mage Slayer and you have more than one opponent, Mage Slayer will trigger and deal 8 damage to the defending player, and if the Omnivore goes unblocked, then each of your opponents will take 8. Mage Slayer's damage is not combat damage, it's a triggered ability, and Hydra Omnivore only triggers on combat damage.

@Absinthman: Technically, combat damage is any damage dealt by creatures in the combat damage step as a result of attacking or blocking. It doesn't necessarily have to be damage to the defending player.

Damage dealt through Mage Slayer will not trigger Hydra Omnivore 's ability, because the ability specifies that it triggers upon dealing combat damage. Damage dealt by Mage Slayer is not combat damage, though I understand why this is confusing. Combat damage is only dealt in combat damage step as a result of a creature attacking and being unblocked.
