Humble Defector+Refocus interaction

Asked by Mortem 10 years ago

Would I be able to draw 5 cards?

Yes.

You activate Humble Defector's ability. Retaining priority, you then cast Refocus targeting Humble Defector.

Refocus resolves, untapping Humble Defector and drawing you a card.

You activate Humble Defector's ability again. When the ability resolves, you will draw two cards and give control of Humble Defector to target opponent. The same thing happens when the other instance of the ability resolves.

No

608.2j If an instant spell, sorcery spell, or ability that can legally resolve leaves the stack once it starts to resolve, it will continue to resolve fully.

You activate Humble Defector's ability. As part of the effect of drawing two cards target opponent gains control of Humble Defector. Players do not receive priority while a spell is resolving so you cannot use a spell/ability to untap Humble Defector before target opponent gains control of him.

...which is why you cast Refocus in response to the first activation, as I stated above.

Also, 608.2j isn't relevant here. Nothing is leaving the stack mid-resolution.

I thought players didn't receive priority and SBA didn't apply during the resolution of spell/abilities. The way I am reading Humble Defector seems more like the ability needs to start to resolve before you can draw cards and from the same above ruling which I have seen you and other members explain in other Q&A's is that once a spell/ability starts resolving nothing can stop it from resolving fully. If this isn't true can you elaborate?

You activate the ability and respond to it. It doesn't just start resolving. Nothing says you need to draw the two cards from the first activation before you try to get more cards.
