Humble Defector + Daring Thief

Asked by ellis 9 years ago

Would Humble Defector come back to me if I used Humble Defectors ability and then untapped Daring Thief (say with a refocus or crypsis) and still get to grab an opponents creature and draw 2 cards to boot ?

Link all cards in your question.
Refocus
Crypsis

I assume you mean to activate Humble Defector's ability, then respond by triggering Daring Thief's ability and exchanging control of Humble Defector and a creature an opponent controls so that Humble Defector's control-changing effect will bring Humble Defector back under your control.

If this is indeed what you mean, then the answer is no.

First, Humble Defector's ability requires a target opponent. You choose the target as one of the first steps in activating the ability. Once chosen, that target cannot be changed.

Second, you control Humble Defector's ability even if you don't control Humble Defector any longer. As such, you'll still control the ability even if an opponent is given control of Humble Defector via some other effect (such as Daring Thief's inspired triggered ability). You'll draw the cards, and the target opponent remains whichever of your opponents you declared as the target when you activated Humble Defector's ability.

Now, what you may do is allow Humble Defector's ability to resolve, then use Daring Thief's ability to regain control of Humble Defector (at the price of exchanging another creature for it).
