How much damage is dealt to creatures?

Suppose I have a Brash Taunter and I have it fight some big hydra. How much damage am I redirecting? I had a friend tell me it would be just 1, because that's how much health he has, but I think he's wrong.

the amount of damage a creature takes is not limited by its toughness. otherwise Brash Taunter would be an entirely pointless 5 mana rare.
