How much damage is acctualy done to the creature?

If my opponent attacks with lets say KindercatchMTG Card: Kindercatch and i'm blocking with a Belltower SphinxMTG Card: Belltower Sphinx does my sphinx take 6 damage or 5? I know that it would only take 5 for trample as the extra 1 damage would be dealt to me. I'm just wondering if my opponent would mill 5 because of Belltower SphinxMTG Card: Belltower Sphinx's toughness., or 6 because of the creatures attack.

I'm also wonder this for lifelink. If I have a Child of NightMTG Card: Child of Night, and I'm blocking(or attacking), and my opposing creature(respectively) is a 1/1 do i gain 2 life or 1?

Unless damage is prevented or extra damage tramples over, a creature deals damage equal to its power in combat. It doesn't matter that Belltower SphinxMTG Card: Belltower Sphinx can only survive 5 damage, KindercatchMTG Card: Kindercatch will still deal all 6 of its damage to it.

In the given situations, your opponent would mill 6 cards (Sphinx vs. Kindercatch) and you would gain 2 life (Child of NightMTG Card: Child of Night vs. 1/1).
