Don't forget to link all cards in your question with double brackets.
"You don't lose the game for having 0 or less life."- Pretty straightforward. If you get to zero life or lower, you normally lose, but now you don't. Life totals can go into the negatives, but if you have Phyrexian Unlife you're still in the game.
"As long as you have 0 or less life, all damage is dealt to you as though its source had infect. (Damage is dealt to you in the form of poison counters.)"- If your life total is zero or less, damage is dealt to you in the form of poison counters instead of damage. If you have ten or more poison counters, you lose the game.
Here are some helpful Gatherer rulings:
6/1/2011: Phyrexian Unlife won't affect damage that reduces your life total from a positive number to 0 or less. For example, if you're at 3 life and are dealt 5 damage, you'll end up at -2 life. The next time you're dealt damage, it will be dealt as though its source had infect.
6/1/2011: If you're at 0 or less life and Phyrexian Unlife leaves the battlefield, you'll lose the game (unless some other effect is keeping you from losing).

He is at 12 and he controls a Phyrexian Unlife.
You hit him for 20. Because all the damage was dealt simultaneously, His life total goes down to -8. Phyrexian Unlife has an ability that says you do not lose the game for having 0 or less life. Which means exactly that; as long as he controls Phyrexian Unlife, he won't lose the game when he has no life points left.
Now the NEXT time he receives damage, his life will be 0 or less, so he will get poison counters instead of losing more life (the second part of Phyrexian Unlife. If you hit him for another 10 damage WHILE HIS LIFE TOTAL IS ALREADY 0 OR LESS, he will get 10 poison counters and die.

This is how it works: Once they get down to 0 life, they start taking damage in the form of poison counters. The way poison counters work is that when a player has 10 or more poison counters, they lose the game. So it essentially gives them 10 ''more'' life. But if Phyrexian Unlife left the board when its controller was at 0 life they would lose.
