How does Mishra, Artificer Prodigy and Nether Void interact?

Asked by Selcath 9 years ago

A lot of Mishra, Artificer Prodigy decks I see run Nether Void as a combo in it. How do these two interact?

It allows you to ignore the downside of playing Nether Void. You do this by stacking your triggers so that the artifact spell is countered then you look for an artifact with the same name. It also means that artifact spells you cast can't be countered by anything else. Here is how you would stack the triggers.

Top

  1. Nether Void trigger

  2. Mishra, Artificer Prodigy trigger

  3. Original spell.

Bottom

The way this would work is: Nether Void would counter the spell which would move the artifact to the graveyard. The Mishra's ability would let you search for it in the graveyard and put it onto the battlefield ignoring the downside of Nether Void.

Most Mishra, Artificer Prodigy EDH decks runs cards that have triggered abilities that counter spells, such as Nether Void, Chalice of the Void, and/or Blood Funnel.

The triggers are stacked so that the counter trigger is on top and Mishra's trigger is on the bottom. The spell is countered, and then Mishra's ability resolves, which allows you to fetch the artifact out of the graveyard.

Thus, your opponents must deal with the effects of Nether Void whereas you can play everything "normally."
