How does Hive Mind work with the stack?

Asked by Drathen 9 years ago

More precisely, how would Hive Mind and Final Fortune work together?

Each player would cast a copy of Final Fortune, which would resolve in order of priority (active player, then the player to his/her right, then the next player, and so on). The extra turns would then proceed in turn order after you've passed your turn, with each opponent losing at the end of their turn (provided they don't win on that turn). When it gets back to you, you won.

You do have to cast this at the end of turn of your opponent sitting next to you in turn order, otherwise you get the first extra turn and you lose to your own combo. Lol

Slight correction to the last statement: you wouldn't always get the next turn (if you're playing with a big group and you cast it on someone else's turn after the person next to you in turn order) but you would get caught in the crossfire any way except that one way.

canterlotguardian's answer got some details wrong.

If the active player casts Final Fortune, then each other player, in turn order, will copy it. The spells resolve in reverse order, meaning the active player's will resolve last.

If a player other than the active player casts Final Fortune, then each other player, beginning with the active player, will copy it. In this situation, the original caster will have the last spell to resolve, with the active player's copy immediately preceding it.

Now, extra turns are applied in the reverse order in which they were created, so the most recently created extra turn will be applied first.

Because the original spell always resolves last, the player who cast Final Fortune will always take his or her extra turn first. If you're the player casting Final Fortune, you'll be the first one presented with a "lose the game" trigger.

You will always get the next turn and will lose first.

Because of the way extra turns work they end up being taken in the reverse order of how they were created. Let's say You have 3 opponents: A, B, and C in turn order. Assume it's A's turn.

  • You cast Final Fortune. Hive Mind triggers.
  • As Hive Mind's trigger resolves, it puts copies of Final Fortune onto the stack. A is on top of your original, B is on top of A, and C is on top of B.
  • The C copy resolves. Extra turn order is now C.
  • The B copy resolves. Extra turn order is now B -> C.
  • The A copy resolves. Extra turn order is now A -> B -> C.
  • Your original resolves. Extra turn order is now You -> A -> B -> C.
  • Each player will lose the game in that order. C will end up winning.

If you want to avoid this, counter your original Final Fortune after Hive Mind has created its copies. Now you just have to survive through the extra turns of 3 opponents who aren't happy with you. =P
