How does detention sphere work?

Asked by Husky 11 years ago

It just made me wonder because it doesn't specify that you have to exile that permanent that is chosen from graveyards, libraries, and hands, does it only pertain to permanents on the field?

Also, can you target your own creatures with Detention Sphere ?

Cards are only permanents when they are on the battlefield. And yes, you may target your own creatures. I'm not entirely sure why you would want to, unless they have an insanely OP ETB effect, but still. So, to answer your question, you may only exile cards that are currently on the battlefield: Creatures, enchantments, artifacts, planeswalkers, etc.

An object is only ever a permanent while it is on the battlefield. Because Detention Sphere 's ability only applies to permanents, it only affects cards (and tokens) that are on the battlefield.

You can target your own permanents with Detention Sphere . The effect is not limited to permanents your opponents control. In fact, if you target a permanent one player controls, all instances of that permanent will be exiled, regardless of controller.

@AJtheConquerer: If you happen to be playing some of the same cards as your opponent, and you want to get rid of a permanent with hexproof, targeting your own instance of that permanent could help you deal with a threat.

When it enters the battlefield you may 'exile target permanent not named Detention Sphere and all other permanents with the same name'

You don't get to interact at all with their graveyard, library or hand. It is only one target thing on the battlefield, and then anything else on the battlefield with the same name. Yes, you could target your own nonland permanents with it.
