How does Deathtouch and Lifelink work with Infect and Wither?

Asked by Mythwind 8 years ago

If a creature with Wither or Infect has also Deathtouch and Lifelink and there is combat damage to another creature, what happens. Does the destroy from Deathtouch still work? Does Lifelink work? Can it gain life greater the toughness of the damage receiving creature?

Damage dealt to creatures from sources with wither or infect result in the placement of -1/-1 counters rather than marked damage.

A creature dealt damage from a source with deathtouch is destroyed the next time state based actions are checked, regardless of whether that damage is done as marked damage, -1/-1 counters, or some something else, or even nothing else, as long as it isn't specifically prevented.

Damage dealt from sources with lifelink cause the sources controller (or owner, if it has no controller) to gain life equal to the damage, in addition to whatever other results the damage has (marked damage, life loss, -1/-1 counters, loss of loyalty counters, poison counters, nothing at all, etc.)

TL;DR - yes, lifelink and deathtouch still work with wither and infect.

Consider these two rule texts for Infect. Only one of them is real.

  • If a source with infect would deal damage to creature, instead put that many -1/-1 counters on that creature.

  • Damage dealt to a creature by a source with infect isnt marked on that creature. Rather, it causes that many -1/-1 counters to be put on that creature.

The first one is fictional. It would create a replacement effect for damage being dealt. Lifelink and Deathtouch care about damage being dealt, so they would not work with Infect or Wither.

But, the second one is the actual rule text. Wither and Infect don't replace dealing damage, but rather deal damage in a different form. Lifelink and Deathtouch work with Infect and Wither without a problem.
