How do dueling Archetypes work?

Asked by Halphinian 8 years ago

I really like the archetypes from one of the Theros blocks (I can't remember the specific name), and so do others who I frequently play with. I was wondering what would happen if my opponent and I both played let's say an Archetype of Imagination or an Archetype of Aggression. Would we simply agree that all creatures have trample and flying or vice-versa or is there some weird rule that applies to these archetypes?

Here is what happens: You play an Archetype of Imagination, all creatures you control now have flying and your opponent's creatures lose flying and cannot gain flying. Then, your opponent plays an archetype of his own, making all of your creatures lose flying, and his gain flying, but your archetype prevents this from happening. Now no creatures have flying and they cannot have or gain flying.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.

2/1/2014: If you and an opponent each control the same Archetype, no creature controlled by any player will have the appropriate ability.

TheNextRedDude is correct. To keep it simple to remember, any effects that say "Don't" or "Can't" always trump effects that say "Do" or "Can". So if two of the same archetypes are controlled by two separate players, no creatures can have the ability described.

Thank you TheNextRedDude and Raging_Squiggle!

I'm sorry Epochalyptik, I just can't seem to do anything right! :)
