How do */* creatures interact with base power/toughness changes?

For instance, if Brenard, Ginger Sculptor creates a copy of Awakened Amalgam, is the token a 1/1 (3/3 because of Brenard's first ability) or does awakened amalgam's ability override its base 1/1 power and toughness?
Similarly, what happens if you play Biomass Mutation while you have an Awakened Amalgam on the battlefield? Does Awakened Amalgam's power and toughness change to X/X until end of turn?

Since there don't seem to be any follow-ups or corrections that need to be made, I marked it as the "Accepted answer" so this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. In the future you can take care of this yourself using the "Mark as Answer" button on the response that you feel is the best answer to your question.
I try to avoid choosing my own responses when I do this, but in this case it was the only option.

Brenard will make a 3/3 copy and Biomass Mutation will change it to be X/X until end of turn.
In the system of layers that the game uses to determine characteristics, an effect that sets a creatures base P/T to something or creates a copy of it with a specific base P/T will completely override the printed P/T, including any * / * values.
