Hero's downfall on pack rat
Asked by PrimeEpoch 11 years ago
So my friend makes a copy of pack rat, and while that's on the stack, I kill it with hero's downfall. I say that the token then fails to make a copy of pack rat, and he says that the token does become a pack rat. Who's right?

Once an ability is on the stack, it exists independantly of its source.
This means that the Pack Rat token will still be generated, even if your friend temporarily has no pack rats on the board.

I know that the ability is independent, it's much more a question of if you can still copy the pack rat even though it's not on the field.

Yes you can copy it. For stuff like this the game uses the often cited 'last known information' (LKI) of the creature it wants to copy.
See also the Gatherer page, which often helps with questions like these:
10/1/2012 If Pack Rat leaves the battlefield before its activated ability resolves, the token will still enter the battlefield as a copy of Pack Rat, using Pack Rat's copiable values from when it was last on the battlefield.
