Gideon’s Sacrifice

Asked by HighTon 5 years ago

Do permanents that damage is redirected from still do damage in combat? My opponent is arguing that only the creature that I selected to receive all damage is now blocking. Therefore, all of my other blockers will not do their damage to her attackers.

I tried searching this card here, but nothing came up. Hopefully I’m not wasting people’s time?

All Gideon's Sacrifice does is create a replacement effect that redirects the damage to the chosen permanent you control. It does not change anything else including what is doing the damage or if creatures are blocking.

One of the great things about MTG is cards do only what they say they do. Since there is no mention about switching blockers or blocking creatures do not deal damage to the creatures they are blocking, the card doesn't do it.

Additionally, just because attacking creatures do not deal their damage to the creatures blocking them doesn't mean they are no longer blocked by those creatures.

Very helpful, thank you! We are pretty new to MTG and we both read into the rules too deeply sometimes.
