Giant Adephage
Asked by MinscAndBoo 11 years ago
If he dies from combat damage but still damages my opponent (say he's blocked by a 7/6), do I still get a token even though he's in my graveyard?
Yes. The token is created at the time damage is dealt, so the effect goes onto the stack before the Adephage actually goes to the graveyard. The token will use last known information to determine the characteristics it copies.

Right--I did check the rulings, but it wasn't clear whether the creature being in the graveyard would matter. My guess is the token would still happen since it's looking for the Giant Adephage object, whichever zone it might be in. That is, does the token "remember" even though the GA card has changed zones? (As opposed to when a creature leaves and then re-enters play, it enters as a "new" version of that permanent).

re: gufymike
The reason it says "normally" and it's worth referencing the last known information is for things that are copy effects that also give the copy other abilities.
So something like Dimir Doppelganger that copied a Giant Adephage actually says
"Trample
Whenever Giant Adephage deals combat damage to a player, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of Giant Adephage.
1UB: Exile target creature card from a graveyard. ~ becomes a copy of that card and gains this ability."

What did I miss, afaic, I basically said the same thing, , "the copy goes on the stack as soon as the damage is done and...." but just referenced the ruling to explain that nothing else would get copied. I just feel like that part got missed by the greater part of my post.

Giant Adephage and yes, the copy goes on the stack as soon as the damage is done and it should simply be a 7/7 Giant Adephage token, it does not copy anything added to the original version such as changes to p/t or counters. This is why.
1/24/2013 As the token is created, it checks the printed values of the Giant Adephage its copyingor, if the Giant Adephage whose ability triggered was itself a token, the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put it onto the battlefieldas well as any copy effects that have been applied to it. It wont copy counters on the Giant Adephage, nor will it copy other effects that have changed Giant Adephages power, toughness, types, color, or so on. Normally, this means the token will simply be a Giant Adephage.
