Gaining control of an opponent's creature which then dies

Asked by WalzY 12 years ago

So, if i take control of an opponent's creature, then it dies, whose graveyard does it go to. Also, if it has undying, what happens?

also, is the "owner" the owner of the card?

If you control an opponents creature, then it dies, it will return to your opponents graveyard.

The owner of a card id the owner of the physical card; in the case of Undying, if you control an opponents creature with Undying and without a counter, when it dies it will return to your opponents side of the battlefield.

  1. A card you own will never end up in an opponent's graveyard. It will always end up in the graveyard of the player that physically owns the card.

  2. Let me use Strangleroot Geist as an example. The important part to notice when answering this question is in the reminder text of Undying. It says: When this creature dies, if it had no +1/+1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under it's owner's control with a +1/+1 counter on it.

Notice that it specifically says "owner" which always means the person who physically owns the card.

Technically, magic defines 'owner' as the person whose deck the card was in at the beginning of the game. It doesn't care who actually owns the card.
