Fuse cards CMC?
Asked by Mazinem 11 years ago
What would a fuse cards converted mana cost be? for example if i have a far/away what would its cmc be?
In every other zone than the stack, a split card has two sets of characteristics. When on the stack, it has only the characteristics of the half(ves) being cast.
If you play both halves, the CMC will be the total of each half, in the case of Far / Away , 3UB.
If you are using a card like Dark Confidant then you will lose 5 life, however a card like Venarian Glimmer needs only be set to the smaller converted mana cost.
This link tells you all you need to know about the card.
TL;DR: it depends on where the card is.

A split card has the converted mana cost of each side, which means Far / Away has mana costs 1U AND 2B.
4/15/2013: In every zone except the stack, split cards have two sets of characteristics and two converted mana costs. If anything needs information about a split card not on the stack, it will get two values.
4/15/2013: On the stack, a split spell that hasnt been fused has only that halfs characteristics and converted mana cost. The other half is treated as though it didnt exist.
4/15/2013: To cast a fused split spell, pay both of its mana costs. While the spell is on the stack, its converted mana cost is the total amount of mana in both costs.

@Dallie: A minor technical note - the CMC of a card is completely colorless. CMC is always just a number, which would be 5 in this case.

In every zone except the stack, a split card's converted mana cost is both halves combined.
In the case of Far / Away , it's 5.
On the stack, it's whichever side is being cast, the other doesn't exist.
It both sides of Far / Away are being cast, it is 5.

K, Counter Question... I believe that Maelstrom Nexus complicates things when you cast both sides of a fused card... is it two cascade triggers? because you are casting two spells simultaneously right??? and if so, I believe since the check for cascade is when the spell(s) is/are on the stack, you would get two cascade triggers with a cvc of 5??? If so that is broken... and awesome!!!

A fused split card is still one spell. You will only get one cascade trigger from Maelstrom Nexus . The cascade will be for the combined CMC of both sides of the split card.

Can someone explain to me, why i would lose 5 life with Dark Confidant if i revealed a Turn / Burn , but Venarian Glimmer with x=2 can target it?

It would have been better to ask that question in a new thread. I only knew you asked it because I never unsubscribed from this thread.
Split cards have two mana costs.
Effects like Venarian Glimmer 's work by checking whether a card has a certain property. If one half of a split card has that property, the check is positive for that card (even if the other side doesn't have that property). Conversely, if the effect checks whether a card does not have a certain property, both halves of a split card must not have that quality.
Effects like Dark Confidant 's work by checking not whether a card has a certain property, but by checking what that property is. Because split cards have two sets of characteristics, these kinds of checks will receive two answers.
If you're familiar with logic comparators, you can sum this up neatly. For split cards:
- If the effect asks whether a card has a certain quality, it's running an OR check. (if either half has that quality, the card has that quality)
- If the effect asks whether a card does not have a certain quality, it's running a NOR check. (if neither half has that quality, the card does not have that quality)
- If the effect asks what the value of a certain quality of a card is, it's running an AND check. (the card has two sets of qualities [while not on the stack and also when fused on the stack)
Also, note that Venarian Glimmer doesn't target the card. It targets the player.
