For poison to work must it hit the player directly

For poison to work does it have to hit a player directly or can a creature block it but it still hits the player with poison

I imagine you mean a creature with infect, like Blightsteel Colossus ?

No, that's not how it works. A creature will only give a player a poison counter if it actually deals damage to him. Just dealing damage to another creature he controls won't do anything beyond hurt his feelings.

Creatures with infect deal damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters, and to players in the form of poison counters. If a creature with infect is blocked, it can't deal damage to the defending player unless it has trample.

All of the old poison creatures (from before the infect ability was introduced) specifically say the defending player gets a poison counter either when they deal damage to the player or they attack and aren't blocked. Again, a blocked creature can't deal damage to the defending player unless it also has trample.

So no poison counters to the player if the creature is blocked.

It depends on the ability, Poisonous N means Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player gets N poison counters. This will not apply poison counters to creatures or to you if a creature blocks.

Infect means damage dealt to a player by a source with infect doesnt cause that player to lose life. Rather, it causes the player to get that many poison counters. Damage dealt to a creature by a source with infect isnt marked on that creature. Rather, it causes that many -1/-1 counters to be put on that creature. This also won't give you poison counters if you a creature blocks, but it will give the creature -1/-1 counters

I hope this helps.

Trample on a creature with infect can still put poison counters on a player so long as the creature blocking doesnt have enough toughness to stop all the damage done by the attacking creature.
