Firemind's Foresight
Asked by Bauhom 11 years ago
What happens if someone plays Firemind's Foresight , but doesn't have a 3 CMC instant card in their library? Can they keep searching for the 2 CMC and 1 CMC?
Thanks!
As a library is considered secret information in game-logic, you can always "fail to find" something when searching.

this gave me question myself, on fuse cards like Far / Away where it is part 2 CMC and 3 CMC, can you pick one or two from the foresight? the ruling only specifies it being played, not being drawn into.

In all zones except the stack, split cards have two sets of characteristics. So Turn / Burn for example, has both CMC 2 and 3. You can thus search for two Turn / Burn s (as a 3-CMC and 2-CMC cards) and for something with CMC 1. On the stack, split cards only have the characteristics of the half being cast, or a single set of characteristics that is a combination of both halves (total) in case of fused spells.

Thank you. So essentially I can put 2 Turn/burn in my hand?

A spell is not required to do everyting that's written on it, but it will always try to do as much as it possibly can. If some part of a spell fails to do something, the other parts are still carried out. So, if you don't find a 3-CMC instant in your library, you can definitely continue searching for 2-CMC and 1-CMC instants. The exception is when the spell is targeted and its targets become illegal or nonexistent before resolution. In that case the whole spell is countered by the rules including all nontargeted parts of it (e.g. Grisly Spectacle will not mill if targeted creature gets hexproof in respons). Firemind's Foresight doesn't target though, so it will always try and search for as many cards as possible.
