Experiment One blocking a 3/3

Asked by parasitian 11 years ago

OK so I have a 3/3 Experiment One and my opponent attacks with a 3/3 and I block. I presumed if I regenerated then the experiment would survive, but then it wouldn't deal its 3 damage and then my opponent's 3/3 would live. Someone told me that you can regenerate and still kill the opposing 3/3. My reasoning is that since damage no longer can be put on the stack, once the experiment one has received and dealt damage then it would be too late to regenerate. Who is right?

Damage is dealt all at once now, instead of using the stack like it used to. So if you allowed damage to be dealt, to kill their 3/3, your Experiment One would be moved to the graveyard as a state-based effect before anybody got priority to regenerate it.

If you removed your two counters to regenerate before damage, you'd only deal 1 damage to their creature and not kill it.

You are correct for the reason you describe.

A regeneration shield must exist before a permanent would be destroyed. You don't get the opportunity to activate it as damage is dealt; state-based actions will destroy the creature before you get priority. Because you must activate the regenerate ability before combat damage is dealt, Experiment One will be a 1/1 when combat damage is dealt.

OK thanks guys, I was pretty sure I was right, but when someone told me otherwise I started to doubt myself.

701.12a If the effect of a resolving spell or ability regenerates a permanent, it creates a replacement effect that protects the permanent the next time it would be destroyed this turn. In this case, Regenerate [permanent] means The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat.

in order to regenerate a creature it had to been destroyed, meaning that combat damage would have already been delt meaning that when the 3/3 experiment one blocks the 3/3, combat damege is delt both are destroyed but instead of the experiment one dieing you can remove the 2 +1/+1 counters keeping him alive another day

the only sketchy part about what i said is the "remove it from combat " bit but either way i made a point that you guys missed
