Exile and RFG, are they the same?

Asked by Du_Co 11 years ago

So this came up when playing a casual edh game with my friend. I know that if a commander were to be exiled you can choose to put it back into the command zone but what if the card removes it from the game? My example is my opponent used Legacy Weapon on my commander. Do I still get to choose to return it to the command zone or is my commander now gone for the remainder of the game?

The updated rules text for Legacy Weapon says

WUBRG: Exile target permanent. If Legacy Weapon would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Legacy Weapon and shuffle it into its owner's library instead.

"Remove from the game" was replaced with "Exile" on all cards a couple years ago, you just have an older printing. Generally it's a good idea to look up cards on Gatherer for the newest and most up to date version of the text. It often answers many "old card" questions on its own.

Yes, they're the same, and you'll have the option of putting your commander into the command zone instead.

  • 406.7. Previously, the exile zone was called the removed-from-the-game zone. Cards that were printed with text that removes [an object] from the game exiles that object. The same is true for cards printed with text that sets [an object] aside. Cards that were printed with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference.

Thanks for the responses, and I'll make sure to check gatherer first next time.

No worries. It's also better to know the general rule that all RFG was replaced with Exile than to just know that about Legacy Weapon specifically. Don't forget to mark an answer correct to clear it from the unanswered queue.
