Enchanting something that becomes a creature

Asked by zigkid3 11 years ago

say you have an artifact that says pay X and it turns into a creature until end of turn, and then you enchant it (or even put an equipment on it). what happens after the end of the turn? does it stay equipped, do any enchantments fall off?

Equipment and auras both specify that they have to be on a creature. When the artifact, say Boros Keyrune , turns back into just an artifact, the enchantment is no longer attached to a legal target and is put in the graveyard and the equipment becomes unequipped.

There are some effects that will remain, however. I know cipher is one of them, but I'm not sure about any others.

@raithe000: Note that auras only target while on the stack, so your explanation of why auras fall off is a bit incorrect. Auras and equipment just need to be legally attached to something. When the object to which it's attached is not longer a legally enchantable or equippable object, the aura or equipment falls off.

An aura with Enchant Artifact should function just fine. Equipment can only attach to creatures, so when it stops being a creature, it will also stop being equipped. Also Cipher cards work just fine in these sorts of situations.
