Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip and losing the game

Asked by daniel.wason 13 years ago

So my friends and I ran into this issue saturday during a multiplayer game: if a person swings with a creature equipped with and deals enough damage to kill an opponent, when it transforms to Withengar UnboundMTG Card: Withengar Unbound, will it get the 13 counters? I feel like the answer is no, since Elbrus's ability is a triggered ability, and when it goes onto the stack, the person will lose as a state based action, and thus by the time Withengar UnboundMTG Card: Withengar Unbound emerges, the player is already dead.

Your feeling is correct, Withengar doesn't get the counters.

Creature with Elbrus swings, deals damage which triggers the elbrus blade. So that and anything else is on the stack.

State based actions then check and find that the one person on the defending end dies and is removed from the game. The blade then resolves and withengar comes out.

The player has already lost when withengar comes out and thus it does not get the 13 counters.

So you were right in your gut feeling.
