Dragonlord Kolaghan's ability while a creature is on the stack
Asked by Fizzz 10 years ago
If a creature is on the stack, and if the same creature is already on the battlefield, could I kill the creature on the battlefield in response, and have my opponent lose the 10 life due to the dragon's triggered ability?
---I tried linking the card--- :)
Dragonlord Kolaghan4BRLegendary Creature - Elder DragonFlying, Haste
Other creatures you control have haste.
Whenever an opponent casts a creature or planeswalker spell with the same name as a card in their graveyard, that player loses 10 life.
jpeachesd the problem I have with your answer is that, I do not believe the trigger would even go into the stack. As I try to understand this ability, the trigger would trigger (lol) if both the creature being cast has name X, and there is another creature with name X on the graveyard at the time the spell is announced.
Does that make any sense? :p

It sounds like you already figured out the answer. No, that doesn't work. If a trigger condition isn't true at the time an ability would trigger then it doesn't trigger. Sarkhan may be able to go back in time and change the course of events, but that doesn't mean you can. =P

@Fizzz: Technically, on-cast abilities trigger only after the casting process is complete. Although it doesn't make a difference here (nobody can respond during any point in the casting process), it does in other scenarios (see the recent question on Pyromancer Ascension).
So the triggered ability would trigger when your opponent finishes casting his or her creature spell. However, the trigger condition is not met at this time, so the ability will not trigger. Once your opponent announced his or her creature spell, it's too late to respond to anything; you won't receive priority until the end of the casting process.

How this works is when you cast it that happens first no matter what, even if it gets countered the card was still cast. So even if you were to kill their creauture, because they already cast the card it would be too late. Hope I helped you out!

@Tyrannosary: Although what you're saying is technically true, it's a little misleading because of how you worded it. We're not interested in countering the creature spell; we're interested whether the ability triggers.

Alright my bad, I was trying to make a point that even if they counter the spell it was still cast, so even if they destroy that creature the one being cast was already cast before the instants effect took place

A fair point, even if it's not the most directly relevant. I see where you were going with it now, though.

No, once they cast the creature, the trigger hits. You may not respond to casting a spell, you may respond the the resolution of that spell on the stack. Order of operation: Creature spell cast > Kologhan Trigger check > Trigger Resolution > Priority passed.
