Doubling Chant with Suture Priest and Ajani's Pridemate

Asked by ZaLiTHkA 13 years ago

I've just hot an interesting scenario in a play test with one of my decks... I'm not entirely sure how it would/should resolve.

To start with, on the battlefield I have: 2x Suture Priest s, 2 Sunspear Shikari s and 2x card:Ajani's Pridemates. At which point I play Doubling Chant .

For the sake of simplicity, let's say I bring out 2 more of each creature. As I understand it, Doubling Chant puts all creatures retrieved from the Library onto the battlefield at the same time.

Obviously the 2x Suture Priests already on the battlefield will trigger (6 times each) because a creature doesn't need to be Cast, and the life-gain will in turn trigger the 2x Ajani's Pridemates that are already in play (12 counters each if my maths is right). But what about the Priests and Pridemates entering from Doubling Chant?

When multiple permanents enter the battlefield at the same time, all appropriate triggered abilities on them will trigger. The new Suture Priest s will also see the other creatures entering, and will trigger accordingly. After each life-gain trigger resolves, all of the card:Ajani's Pridemates, including the new ones, will trigger and get +1/+1 counters. Here's the rules support for it:

603.6a Enters-the-battlefield abilities trigger when a permanent enters the battlefield. These are written, "When [this object] enters the battlefield, . . . " or "Whenever a [type] enters the battlefield, . . ." Each time an event puts one or more permanents onto the battlefield, all permanents on the battlefield (including the newcomers) are checked for any enters-the-battlefield triggers that match the event.

Wow.... That makes that a pretty insane combo then! With those 6 creatures entering in that scenario, I'd get 24 instances of "Gain 1 life...". Which would give 4 Ajani Pridemates 24 counters each. That's a scary thought...

Thanks Rhadamanthus, I'm sure I did look at Triggered Abilities in the rules on MtgSalvation, but I completely missed that paragraph (it is a rather long page after all)... That cleared it up nicely though. :)
