Does trample still fight through protection?

Asked by NuBByThuMB 11 years ago

This is a common question at the table that I actually don't have a real answer to. Would a creature with trample still deal it's overage after being blocked by a creature with protection from his color/creatures?

From the comprehensive rules:

702.19b Example: A 6/6 green creature with trample is blocked by a 2/2 creature with protection from green. The attacking creatures controller must assign at least 2 damage to the blocker, even though that damage will be prevented by the blockers protection ability. The attacking creatures controller can divide the rest of the damage as he or she chooses between the blocking creature and the defending player.

So yeah, it assigns damage as normal, the defender is spared.

Protection prevents damage that would be dealt, but trample affects damage assignment. When determining what counts as lethal damage for the purposes of damage assignment, you don't take into account any effects that would change the amount of damage that would actually be dealt. If Silver Knight blocks Orgg , 2 to the Knight and 4 to the defending player is a legal damage assignment. Protection will keep the Knight alive.

Awesome. I didn't think it wouldn't but it's good to have a straight forward confirmation. Moreover, it knocks a to-do off my to list :P Thanks.

You must assign at least lethal damage to the protection creature, but this does not take into account whether the damage will actually be dealt.

For example, if a 5/5 trampler is blocked by a 2/2 with pro creatures, you must assign at least 2 damage to the blocker, but you can assign up to 3 damage to the defending player.
