Does Reaper King activate for changling instants and sorceries?

Asked by hrrhythm0 13 years ago

Let's say I have a Reaper King on the field. If I play a scarecrow, he activates. If I play a changeling, like Moonglove Changeling , it counts as a scarecrow, so it activates.

So what if I play a changeling instant, such as Ego Erasure ? Will he activate and destroy target permanent?

Absolutely. Reaper King 's ability does not specify that for his ability to activate, it needs to be a creature, so yes. It would activate you ability.

First, we need to clarify that Reaper King 's ability is a triggered ability, not an activated ability.

If you cast Moonglove Changeling and it resolves, then Reaper King 's ability will trigger.

702.71a Changeling is a characteristic-defining ability. Changeling means This object is every creature type. This ability works everywhere, even outside the game.

Ego Erasure , on the other hand, will not trigger Reaper King . This is because Reaper King 's triggered ability specifically states enters the battlefield under your control. Ego Erasure can not enter the battlefield.

304.4. Instants cant enter the battlefield. If an instant would enter the battlefield, it remains in its previous zone instead.

Whenever a card uses a creature type as a noun ("a Goblin", "a Merfolk", "a Sliver") in it's rules text, it is referring to a permanent of that type. So any Scarecrow creatures or Tribal artifacts/enchantments/planeswalkers/lands with the subtype Scarecrow will trigger Reaper King when they enter the battlefield.
