Does protection from a single color prevent abilities from creatures that share 1 or more color?

Asked by sparta88 9 years ago

So, my bro came up with an interesting question regarding my werewolf deck.

For example, if I play immerwolf and it is a red/green creature, and he gives protection to red or green to one of my werewolves, does it cancel out the effects of immerwolf effecting that creature?

Creatures with Protection from [quality] cannot be:

Damaged, by sources with that quality (the damage is prevented).

Enchanted / Equipped, by cards with that quality.

Blocked, by creatures with that quality.

Targeted, by spells or abilities from sources with that quality.

The static ability from Immerwolf does not target. So protection does not do anything and the abilities will apply

Immerwolf

No not in this case. Protection from a color would indeed stop any multicolor creature, that has at least that color, from interacting with it.

In this scenario protection wouldn't change anything. In order for protection to apply, something with the attribute being protected from must fall into the DEBT category.
-Dealt damage.
-enchanted by something.
-blocked.
-targeted.

Since Immerwolf is doing none of these things, its static buff will continue to apply to your creatures.

To address the question in the title, though, protection from one of an object's characteristics translates to protection from that object. So while Immerwolf's ability doesn't do anything that cares about protection, protection from either red or green (or from Wolves or creatures, etc.) would mean that an object couldn't be damaged or blocked by Immerwolf.
