Does Pendrell Mists' ability stack with multiple?

My friend pointing out to me the its ability, even with two out, counts only once since they give that creature the ability. That made absolutely no sense to me for I, using my common logic, thought the creature gains multiples of the ability in which all trigger at the beginning of the opponent's upkeep.
Granted, he's been playing longer than me so this puts my logic into questioning since he's taught me a lot.
Thoughts?

The creatures would have multiple instances of the 1 upkeep that would each have to be paid.
