Does my opponent know which card i get from Signal the Clans?
Asked by Emzed 12 years ago
When casting Signal the Clans , i search my library for three creatures A, B and C and reveal them. Now i select one at random, put it into my hand and shuffle the others into my library. One thing isn't clear to me from the rules text: Does my opponent see which final card is selected or is he only allowed to see the initial cards, i.e., the three cards are revelaed to him, but then placed face down once the random selection happens? It might not always matter, but that is certainly an important piece of information that my opponent should or should not have.
I believe your opponent doesn't know. You reveal the three cards to prove they are all different named creatures, then have to randomly choose one to put into your hand. Most players would do this with the cards upside down, and it never states that you have to reveal the chosen card, so I wouldn't.

The cards are revealed. Therefore, both you and your opponent(s) will know what card you get. Nothing in the text of Signal the Clans says the revealed cards become hidden again before they are shuffled into your library, so they remain revealed throughout the selection process.

Just to make it clear: turning objects face-down in order to make a random choice isn't a necessary or official procedure. In fact, there's no official procedure for making random choices described or mentioned in the rules. You just have to come up with a method that's unpredictable and isn't more heavily weighted towards one choice over any other. Like Epochalyptik said, nothing in Signal the Clans says the cards become hidden at any point in the process, so they remain revealed.

To add a bit more: if an effect causes you to make a random choice, you still have to abide by the other conditions of the effect. If you want to randomly select a creature card during Signal the Clans 's resolution by turning the cards face down, shuffling them, and picking one, then you must reveal the cards at the end of that process because Signal the Clans requires the information to be public.
Most people choose to roll D6s instead.

The cards remain revealed until added to your deck/hand I believe.
