Does life loss count as damage?

If a card causes an opponent to lose life does it count as damage. What I am specifically thinking of is whether or not Pierce Strider would cause card:Chandra's Spitfire's ability to activate.

Damage causes you to lose life, but losing life is not damage.

In other words, no, Pierce Strider does not count for the spitfire.
