Does intervention pact get canceled if it's target becomes illegal

Asked by alexininikovsky 11 years ago

If i target a Pyrite Spellbomb with Intervention Pact , and the spellbomb gets sacrificed before the spell resolves will the intervention pact still resolve or will it get countered. When does one choose the source that intervention pact is preventing, when cast or when it resolves?

Intervention Pact does not say the word target on it, therefore it doesn't target

It won't get countered

Intervention Pact chooses a target upon resolution, so if the Pyrite Spellbomb is gone at that time, than you must choose a different source

@Sam_I_am: Intervention Pact chooses a source upon resolution. As you just explained, it doesn't target, and targets are never chosen on resolution anyway.

Ok. Thanks guys.

Just to be clear, if you cast Intervention Pact before Pyrite Spellbomb is sacrificed, and your opponent then sacs it in response, the damage will be dealt before Intervention Pact can resolve.

That's not a counter due to illegal targets, but will bypass Intervention Pact nonetheless.

I am aware of that. I was more concerned about my opponent having a loophole to Hive Mind + Intervention Pact

Hive Mind will make you copy any instant or sorcery, even if the original spell is countered, and Intervention Pact s delayed trigger will occur even if no damage was actually prevented. There's also no targeting that would prevent it from being cast. I think it's not even necessary for a source capable of dealing damage to be on the field.

There's no need for a loophole. You simply play Intervention Pact while Hive Mind is on the field.

Triforce-Finder is right that you don't need to choose a damage-capable source for Intervention Pact . If the combo with Hive Mind is the reason you're playing it, you can just choose Hive Mind as the source.

I was concerned that my opponent would be able to choose something and then sacrifice it. I am relieved that it is not the case.
