Does Godsend work with commanders?

Asked by Zeke_0 9 years ago

If Godsend's equipped creature blocks or become blocked by an opponent's commander with Godsend targeting that commander, will that player not be able to cast their commander if they put it into the command zone instead? Or will they be able to play it as normal because it isn't in the exile zone?

Gatherer doesn't specify if the card has to be in the exile zone or not.

Thanks!

First, Godsend's ability doesn't target anything. A spell or ability only targets if it uses the word "target."

No. The commander rules allow your opponent to replace the event [exile] with the event [return to the command zone], meaning his or her commander was never actually exiled. Godsend's last ability will not affect the commander in that instance because the commander was not exiled.

Note, however, that if someone else is running the same creature as a regular card in their 99, you can exile that one and catch the other opponent's commander with the blanket effect.

You're right, I just read that on gatherer. :P I meant exiling that commander.

That makes sense, thank you!
