Does Erebos keep tainted remedy from causing damage?

Would the ability on Erebos, God of the Dead that says "opponents can't gain life" keep Tainted Remedy from causing them to lose life? The wording of "if they would gain life" is what is confusing me.

Yes, it would the prevent the damage, since the life gain can't happen, therefore the replacement can't take affect.

Random nitpicks: Tainted Remedy doesn't deal damage, but rather cause loss of life. Also, because of this, damage would not be prevented. The replacement effect that causes the loss of life simply never goes off, since it has nothing to replace.
