Does Elite Scaleguard require only a single +1/1 counter?

Or does the ability triger if there are multiple counters on the card for a example a creature with a +2/2, which is essentially a creature with two +1/1s, or otherwise any any creature with multiple +1/1s?

A +2/+2 counter is not the same as two +1/+1 counters. If a creature asks for a +1/+1 counter, only counters that meet exactly that criteria are sufficient.

If a creature has multiple +1/+1 counters, it has "a +1/+1 counter", so the criteria is met.
