Does double-strike go through a creature and hit the opponent?
Asked by rmarcum13 12 years ago
Let's say i have a 1/1 creature with double-strike, and my opponent also has a 1/1 creature, but without double-strike. If I were to attack, and my opponent blocked, would my creature deal enough damage in the 'first strike combat' phase to destroy my opponent's creature (while mine is left unharmed) and then continue on to do damage to the opponent in the second 'normal combat damage' phase? I feel like this would make sense considering a creature with double-strike creature is able to deal damage in both combat steps.
Think of it as an analogy.
If a warrior with two swords (double-strike creature) is running toward a castle (your opponent) and the castle sends out a warrior (blocking creature) to defend the castle, your warrior would have to stop short and deal with the defending warrior. The fact that your warrior has two swords makes it easier for yours to deal with theirs, but it doesn't make it somehow just randomly deal damage to the castle if it had to stop its attack short.

That is actually an excellent analogy, zandl. I'll have to remember that for the future.

Please break out that analogy IRL when someone has that rules question.

If Dritz has anything to do with Drizzt Do'Urden, then... of course he loves that analogy!

And what if the defending player sends 2 blocking creatures, the double strike attacking creature will die?

That all depends on the creatures. lets say Mirran Crusader is attacking, and two Merfolk of the Pearl Trident block. The Crusader can assign one damage to each during the Assign First Strike damage phase of combat and be okay. But if it's a pair of 2/2's, then the Crusader will only be able to kill one of them, and the other will strike normally with the Crusader.

So if the power of blocking creatures is equal or greater the resistence of [mirran crusader], it will kill just one and the other will battle him normally?

The power of the blocking creatures doesn't matter. If any creatures survive the First Strike damage, they will be still on the Battlefield and be able to attack during the "normal" combat damage.

But then two 2/2 would die blocking mirran crusader, because the first strike attack would happen on both creatures that are blocking him, right?Or the mirran crusader would just have with one creature the first strike attack and the other would be the normal combat?
I'm sorry to keep questioning, but this is very confusing.

Doublestrike allows a creature to deal damage in both the First Strike Combat Damage and the "normal" Combat Damage phases. In both steps, creatures only do as much damage as their Power, divided however the player wants. Again, if Mirran Crusader was blocked by two 2/2's, the Crusader would deal 2 damage to one of the 2/2's during the "First Strike" damage phase, and it would die. The other 2/2 would still be alive to deal damage during the "normal" combat damage phase.
