Does Dethrone stack?
Asked by CuteSnail 10 years ago
When Marchesa's Infiltrator attacks if I have Marchesa, the Black Rose on the field, and I'm attacking the player with the most life, would the infiltrator get two counters or one?

If your wrong epoc you best give up that seal!
But you are probably right in this case.

It does not stack. Dethrone only works on the creature who has it. Ergo, 1 counter.

Sorry, xxfukkixx, you're incorrect.
Straight from Wizards:
The second thing to remember is that dethrone stacks. If Marchesa, the Black Rose is also on your side of the battlefield, her Smuggler has dethrone, dethrone. Getting two +1/+1 counters for attacking the person with the highest life total can be a pretty alluring incentive.
Remember that Marchesa's Infiltrator has its own instance of dethrone outside the one granted to it by Marchesa herself.

Wow, that's pretty fun. Kind of confusing considering the writing. The card clearly says "This creature".

I think you're slightly confused. Marchesa grants dethrone to each other creature. Each dethrone ability is specific to the creature to which it has been granted or on which it is written. Marchesa has one instance of dethrone, and Marchesa's Infiltrator has two. They don't trigger for other creatures.

Oh! Thanks for clearing that up. I was sitting here thinking the Dethrone stacked with each other. Wasn't really thinking of just Marchesa and other Dethrone creatures.

Dethrone is a triggered ability, and nothing about the wording suggests it's redundant. Each instance should stack.
Of course, we'll need to wait for release notes to know "for sure," but I'll stake my Imperial Seal on this ruling.
