Does Cathar's Crusade trigger for each creature?

Asked by Sikening 11 years ago

So I played a game today, and an interesting question came up;

With Cathars' Crusade on the field, when you play a card such as Trostani's Summoner , will each creature token trigger the effect again?

So for example; there's a 1/1 spirit with one +1/+1 counter on the field. You play Trostani's Summoner . You place a 2/2 knight, 3/3 centaur, and a 4/4 rhino on the field in that order. Would the spirit get five +1/+1 counters, since four creatures are entering the field, with Trostani's Summoner getting four, the knight getting three, the centaur getting two, and the rhino getting one, or would the spirit only get one +1/+1 counter when all four enter the field?

Also, this hasn't really been up for debate, but with Cathars' Crusade on the field, will a creature enter with a +1/+1 counter on it? (The example above assumes that it does).

When Trostani's Summoner is summoned, all of the tokens and the summoner enter the battlefield at the same time. Cathars' Crusade will trigger four times, granting each creature 4x +1/+1 counters.

Cathars' Crusade would trigger four times - once for each entering creature. Each trigger will resolve and put a +1/+1 counter on all creatures you currently control - meaning all five of your creatures get four +1/+1 counters.

Note that when Trostani's Summoner enters the battlefield, you have to stack both its ETB ability and Cathars' Crusade 's ability. Ideally, you would stack the Cathars' Crusade 's ability first so it resolves last and gives counters to the tokens.

I don't really know what your last question is asking. If you're referring to the creature that enters the battlefield and triggers Cathars' Crusade 's ability, that creature doesn't enter with the counter. It gets the counter when the ability resolves.

@FalseDemise: Trostani's Summoner and the tokens do not enter at the same time. The tokens are created by an ability that triggers only when Trostani's Summoner enters the battlefield.

Its a trigger on cathars crusade that makes the counters. Cathars crusade will trigger everytime a creature enters period. triggers go on the stack so all the creatures will recieve all their counters x the number of triggers. Remember though your opponent can respond to the triggers on the stack killing certain creatures with instant damage or whatever before the crusade triggers put counters on them.

Thank you @Epochalyptik. I caught it after I reread the answer.

yes, Cathars' Crusade triggers for each creature that enters the battlefield, even if they enter due to the resolution of the same spell or effect; in the above scenario, the 2/2 spirit will end up as a 6/6. comp rules 603.2c: An ability triggers only once each time its trigger event occurs. However, it can trigger repeatedly if one event contains multiple occurrences.

as for the second question: yes, again. the creature enters the battlefield. this trigger's the crusade. the crusade ability sees all creatures on the battlefield, including the one that triggered it, and gives them counters.
