Does Cascade see CMC or casting cost?

Asked by SteelNinja 11 years ago

Say for example I had a Cloud Key out for enchantments and I cast Ardent Plea for WU. Would the Ardent Plea be able to cascade into an Ethercaste Knight ?

Or what if I had a Maelstrom Nexus on the battlefield and I cast a Mystic Speculation with the buyback. Does it count as 1 or 4? What about alternate costs such as overload as opposed to additional ones such as kicker?

I'm confused because Cascade's text just says "that costs less" so I don't know if they mean the printed value or what you paid for it.

And what about copies of spells?

I know this doesn't answer your question, but for quick reference of someone who may be better able to:

702.83a Cascade is a triggered ability that functions only while the spell with cascade is on the stack. Cascade means When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card whose converted mana cost is less than this spells converted mana cost. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then put all cards exiled this way that werent cast on the bottom of your library in a random order.

That actually does answer the question. The fancy ability text states that it sees converted mana cost, which only cares about the printed value.Thank you :-)
