Does Armor of Thorns sacrifice the creature it was enchanting?

Asked by Pocketmouse 6 years ago

Armor of Thorns gets a little confusing in it's wording, even in it's orcle text. On gatherer it says:

"You may cast Armor of Thorns as though it had flash. If you cast it any time a sorcery couldn't have been cast, the controller of the permanent it becomes sacrifices it at the beginning of the next cleanup step.Enchant nonblack creatureEnchanted creature gets +2/+2."

I was using this card as an example in a scenario I had created to make a finite loop of clean up steps because I just thought that was a funny interaction. At any rate I was going through the scenario whith my play group and some one said that the creature it was enchanting would be sacrificed as well. Now I'm just trying to get clarification on the wording of the card:Is just armor of thorns sacrificed, or is the creature sacrificed as well? To me the way it reads is that Armor of Thorns is sacrificed.

Just the armor. "The controller of the permanent it becomes" is probably the confusing part, since cards in your hand or on the stack are permanents. They figure out how to say that properly.

This is one of those things where the legacy text is less confusing than the oracle text as I just read the original card. Thanks for the help!
