Does afflict count as combat damage?

Asked by shamas889 6 years ago

I'm trying to work Ammit Eternal into a zombies deck, and it says it removes all -1/-1 when it deals combat damage. Does its afflict ability count as combat damage?

No. Combat damage is damage dealt during the combat damage step.

Afflict triggers in the declare blockers step (when the creature gets blocked) and doesn't deal damage, but lets your opponent lose life (damage leads to life loss, but the two are separate things).

To further clarify, damage dealt by spells and abilities is never combat damage. Combat damage is only the damage dealt during a combat damage step by creatures either to the creatures they're blocking/blocked by or to the defending player/planeswalkers.

To clarify even further, combat damage is specifically the damage done as a result of the turn based action at the start of the combat damage step. Any other damage dealt by the creature in the combat damage step is not combat damage. (This is covered by "damage from spells and abilities is never combat damage", but people have a tendency to ignore blanket statements and just use criteria given and still have misconceptions.)
