Does Adarkar Valkyrie work on Serra Avatar ?

Asked by mf13 8 years ago

I had a Serra Avatar in play, my opponent killed her, the tapped his Adarkar Valkyrie to return her to the battlefield under his control. We were unsure however if Serra Avatar would get shuffled back into the library before he could gain control of her. I've been thinking about it for a while, and my best guess is Serra Avatar would touch the graveyard and her ability would go on the stack; then if my friend tapped Adarkar Valkyrie in response, her ability would go on the stack, then fire off before the Avatar's. In short, my friend gets control. Any help is greatly appreciated!

When two triggered abilites (delayed or otherwise) controlled by separate players are sinultanesouly put on the stack targeting the same thing, it goes in the stack in APNAP order (Active Player Non-Active Player) and resolves in the reverse order. The active player is whoever' turn it is.

If it's you're turn, his Adarkar Valkyrie's triggered ability will resolve first, and if it's his turn, your shuffle trigger will resolve first.

Also note, your opponent can't activate the Adarkar Valkyrie in response to the shuffle trigger because at that point the Serra Avatar is no longer in play and isn't a legal target anymore.

Just to clarify, Adarkar Valkyrie has an activated ability that needs a target creature. When the activated ability resolves, it creates a delayed triggered ability (DTA) that triggers when the target creature does this turn. The DTA needs to exist before the creature dies (1) because it can't trigger retroactively and (2) because the creature card will be an illegal target for the activated ability once it's in the graveyard.

Because we're now dealing with two triggered abilities (Serra Avatar's dies ability and Adarkar Valkyrie's ability's DTA), the situation plays out depending on the turn as described above.
