Do I control my commander while it is the command zone?

Asked by Lazarus369 11 years ago

I am new to EDH and I am wondering if, while my commander is in the command zone, does that count as me controlling him, or must he be in active play? For example if I play a Gravecrawler with my commander as Thraximundar , am I able to play my Gravecrawler again with Thraximundar still being in the command zone and having no other zombies in play?

No. You can only control permanents on the battlefield or spells on the stack.

No, he must be on a battlefield. You control only permanents, and Thraximundar is not a permanent while in the command zone.

Sorry, Tradeylouish is correct, you can also control spells on the stack.

Oops, I forgot something too. You can control any type of object on the stack, including activated and triggered abilities.

Also, when Gravecrawler says "as long as you control a Zombie" it refers only to Zombie permanents you control, not objects on the stack.

I'd like to note that some cards have specific abilities that only happen while in the command zone, I can't remember the card, but he gives 2 life per turn while in the command zone or on the field

@vbcnxm_

You would be thinking of Oloro, Ageless Ascetic .
