Discard and instants
Asked by TheMagi 12 years ago
If a player has to discard a card and it is an instant, can said player play it immediately and then not have to discard a different card?
Say for instance the Liliana of the Veil ability forces me to discard, if I play the instant that I chose to discard, do I then still need to discard or does it satisfy the requirement? How does this work for an opponent discarding, and how does it work if your own card makes you discard?

Oh, I see I didn't understand your whole question. If you have cards in your hand when the discard effect resolves, you still have to discard something. Casting a spell in response doesn't let you avoid it.

On a side not you cannot choose to cast the card after choosing to discard it anyways. Once you let the ability resolve you HAVE to make the choice of what you are going to discard and then discard it.

Thanks for the additional clarification. I wanted to be as cheap as possible with the discard stuff... oh well...

Whenever a player casts a spell or activates an ability, everyone gets a chance to respond before it resolves. If a player activates Liliana of the Veil 's +1 ability, then anyone who is holding any instant cards or cards with flash can play them in response, before Liliana's ability resolves and makes them discard.
