Desacration Demon's sacrifce

Asked by Chockoghost 9 years ago

Let's assume I have Desecration Demon on the battlefield. I don not attack, just pass my turn after 1st main phase. Can my opponent sacrifice a creature to trigger Demon's ability?

The combat phase always happens, unless some effect specifically tells a player to skip it. Desecration Demon triggers at the beginning of combat on every turn, whether or not a player intends to declare any attackers (if there are no attackers, the combat phase does skip over the declare blockers and combat damage steps, going to the end of combat step).

Because you control Desecration Demon and its triggered ability requires another player to make a choice, it's also your responsibility to keep up with it and point it out every turn. You can't just ignore it.

Note that Desecration Demon 's ability triggers at the beginning of each combat. It doesn't trigger when someone sacrifices a creature. The sacrifice is an optional cost that is or isn't paid during the resolution of the triggered ability. You also can't sacrifice something just to sacrifice it.
