Deck rules

Asked by flagg777 9 years ago

I see constructed decks with 45 cardsthe protectors come in sets of 50 and I see many "commander" style decks at 100.

If I go to a tournament, an actual MTG named event NOT a game club. what is the minimum size deck? AND do you lose the game if you are unable to draw a card or an action has you draw a card and you cannot due to lack of cards?

It boils down to my 50 card protectors, do I need to buy another pack just for those 10 cards?

Lets face it: Odds of pulling your combo in 50 cards is better than in 60.

Thanks

Unfortunately, you will need to get more card sleeves (or forego sleeves like the Devil itself). The minimum deck size for a constructed event is 60. This is non-negotiable.

First, the size of sleeve packages has nothing to do with allowed cards in decks... obviously.

Depending on the format, there's different minimum requirements. There is no maximum, except that you have to be able to shuffle your entire deck without assistance.

To name a few example, most constructed formats (Modern, Legacy, Vintage) use a 60 card mainboard, whereas Limited decks (Sealed, Draft) have a minimum of 40 cards.

Specific formats may have different rules entirely (such as Commander or Highlander with exactly 100 cards).

For most constructed events, your deck must be at least 60 cards. You may have a sideboard of up to 15 cards.

For Limited events, the minimum deck size is 40. You build Limited decks from the cards you get as part of the event itself.

For Commander, you need a deck of exactly 100 cards (including the commander itself). You may have up to a 10-card sideboard if your playgroup agrees to use the optional sideboard rule.

Many common manufacturers are in the habit of making packs of 80 sleeves: enough for a main deck, sideboard, and some spares. Some manufacturers offer packs of 100+ for Commander.

You generally want to get more than enough because, over time, a few get destroyed or lost; speaking from experience here, particularly if you get some novelty anime ones or something, it can be hard to find those again later.

Also, note the sleeves aren't strictly for Magic. Doomtown has 52 card decks, for example; they have every reason to complain about selling packs of 50...
