Deathtouch VS First Strike
Asked by DonDoyDiagonal 11 years ago
Hello, I am fairly new to Magic. I have only been playing for two years and not enough to know all of the rules. So, my question is if my card has deathtouch and I attack an opponent and they block with a card that has first strike, would their creature still die? Or would mine die if their power/toughness was enough to kill my creature by blocking it? Please help...this kind of confuses me and I just want to make sure I am playing correctly. Thank you in advance!!

Let's say you attack with a Sedge Scorpion , and you opponent defends with an Anvilwrought Raptor .
My steps are a little rusty, but the overall combat step looks something like this:
Enter combat step
Declare attackers step
Declare blockers step
First/double strike step (when creatures with first/double strike deal damage)
Normal damage step (when creatures without first strike deal damage and when creature with double strike deal damage again)
End of combat step
So your Sedge Scorpion would take two damage from Anvilwrought Raptor and would die before it deals damage.

deathtouch essentially means that any amount of damage a creature deals is enough to kill another creature.
If a creature with deathtouch(and not first strike) gets killed by a creature with first strike, than It will never have a chance to deal damage in the first place, and the creature with first strike will survive.

Thank you for answering my question, that explains it good for me so now I have a better understanding of how deathtouch and first strike work especially against eachother. :)

If their first strike damage is enough to kill your creature, it will die before it has a chance to deal any damage, deathtouch or not.
A non-first striking deathtouch blocking or being blocked by a first-striker is going to take damage before it can do damage.
