counter's question
Asked by Vman 13 years ago
umm well irst fo all i dont know if its in the right section so i apologize if its suposed to be in forums. well ehre we go.if a creature with a +1/+1 counter gets hit by card:Black Sun's Zenith for 1 (-1/-1) does that mean it lost its +1/+1? or does oit mean it now has a +1/+1 AND a -1/-1

If a creature has X +1/+1 counters and X -1/-1 counters on it, then those counters are negated and removed as a state-based action. The example creature will lose both its -/- counter and +/+ counter.
121.3. If a permanent has both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it, N +1/+1 and N -1/-1 counters are removed from it as a state-based action, where N is the smaller of the number of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it. See rule 704.

Alright, so the cards in question are Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Loyal Cathar Flip.
Text of Mikaeus, the Unhallowed:
Legendary Creature - Zombie Cleric
Mythic Rare
Intimidate
Whenever a Human deals damage to you, destroy it.
Other non-Human creatures you control get +1/+1 and have undying.
Text of Loyal Cathar//Unhallowed Cathar:
Creature - Human Soldier // Creature Zombie Soldier
Common
Vigilance
When Loyal Cathar dies, return it to the battlefield transformed under your control at the beginning of the next end step.
//
B
Unhallowed Cathar can't block.
What Happens:
You control both Mikaeus and Loyal Cathar. Loyal Cathar dies, and its death effect causes it to return to the battlefield transformed.
Once transformed, Loyal Cathar becomes Unhallowed Cathar. Due to Mikaeus's ability, Unhallowed Cathar gets +1/+1 and has undying (it has these effects AS it enters the battlefield). This means that when Unhallowed Cathar dies, it will return to the battlefield due to its undying ability. HOWEVER, in accordance with rule 711.5, a DFC will always enter the battlefield front-face up unless otherwise specified (which is how LC/UC returns as UC).
711.5. A double-faced card enters the battlefield with its front face up.
Therefore, Unhallowed Cathar will die and return as a Loyal Cathar with no extra buffs or abilities. Then, if Loyal Cathar dies, the process will repeat (it will come back as Unhallowed Cathar).
