Corpsejack Menace Stacking?

Asked by Galvan 11 years ago

If you have two Corpsejack Menace 's down on the field would their abilities stack?

For example: There's two Corpsejack's down and I drop a Kalonian Hydra . The hydra would come in as a 4/4 and get doubled from one Corpsejack to 8/8, then doubles again to 16/16.

Or in the same situation as above: drop as a 4/4, double to an 8/8, and then double the original 4 again to make it a 12/12.

Or it would just stay as an 8/8 if there is no stacking.

Yes, two Corpsejack Menace s would work together.

Menace's ability is a type of replacement effect (they usually can be seen by the words "as", "with", "instead" and/or "prevent" somewhere in the text). When an event happens, you check to see if there are any replacement effects that could apply to it. After applying one of them, it's possible that others could also apply to the modified event.

Here, the event is "counters being placed on a creature you control" and entering the battlefield with counters counts as them being "placed". So Kalonian Hydra is entering the battlefield, and one Menace replaces "enter with 4 counters" with "enter with 8 counters". The other Menace can still apply to this modified event, so "enter with 8 counters" is replaced with "enter with 16 counters".

A replacement effect can only be applied to an event once, so that's why you don't get into a loop of infinite doubling.

Yes they would. When two or more replacement effects are trying to modify the same event or object, you as the controller of the event or object choose which one of them will be applied first. Then, if the newly modified event is still applicable for the second replacement effect, it takes place.

Always check Gatherer rulings before asking a question.
10/1/2012: If you control two Corpsejack Menaces, the number of +1/+1 counters placed is four times the original number. Three Corpsejack Menaces multiplies the original number by eight, and so on.

Epochalyptik Didn't think to check there, I'll keep it in mind, thanks.
